Thessalian cavalry ride down a Boeotian (Theban) hoplite.
While much of Greece was rocky and ill-suited to large scale agricultural estates that could support large herds of horses, Thessaly possessed wide plains allowing for much larger estates than the rest of the wealthy in the other Greek states possessed. Because of this, while cavalry were an exceptionally small subset of most Greek armies, and even the wealthy who could afford to keep horses were often average horsemen at best, the Thessalians were skilled horsemen who made extensive use of cavalry in their military formations
