The psiloi were the lowest form of fighter in the Greek military hierarchy, often nothing more than local shepherds armed with sticks and stones, but with enough numbers, they could nevertheless rout a small force of Hoplites, as the Athenians discovered in 426 BCE when Demothenes led an ill-fated expedition in to the Aetolian mountains only to be defeated.
