Tom Barry and his Flying Column
Tom Barry and his Flying Column ambush a patrol of Auxiliaries on November 28, 1920 at Kilmichael. Barry, dressed in his Volunteer uniform, stood in the center of the road as the British approached in two open topped vehicles to make them stop, hoping they would mistake him as British. As they neared, he threw a grenade into the cab of the lead vehicle as his men opened fire. The ambush was a total success, killing 17 of the 18 man patrol with only 3 dead on the side of the IRA, and securing Barrys reputation as a daring guerrilla leader.
