Born today in 1920, Rosalind Franklin was an excellent physical chemist and X-ray crystallographer who provided ground-breaking information towards the discovery of the double helix form of DNA by making X-ray diffraction photographs.
Based on these photographs and combined with additional research, James Watson, Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins were able to confirm the molecular structure of DNA that Franklin had predicted beforehand and were awarded the Nobel Prize in physics in 1962.
